    Using the Funnel Method to Deepen Donor Engagement

    Do you ever struggle to get the information you want out of donor conversations? This presentation will walk participants through how a litigation tool called the Funnel Method can transform planned giving conversations from transactional interactions to meaningful dialogues that uncover donors' true motivations and philanthropic passions. The Funnel Method offers a structured yet flexible approach, helping you ask the right questions and listen actively to build stronger, more meaningful connections with potential donors.

    Through examples and role playing, you'll learn how to guide conversations from broad, open-ended questions to deeper, more focused inquiries that uncover the motivations and values behind a donor's interest in giving. By using this method, you'll improve your ability to listen, engage, and personalize your outreach, ultimately fostering trust and encouraging long-term commitment to your organization.

    Matthew Treadwell

    Matthew Treadwell is a Gift Planning Attorney at the Indiana University Foundation. His office is located on the IU Indianapolis Campus. Along with his fundraising responsibilities, Matt directs IU's Planned Giving marketing efforts. Matt is Adjunct Faculty for the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy's The Fund Raising School.

    Prior to joining IU Foundation, Matt was the Planned Giving Officer for the National FFA Foundation. Before entering the nonprofit world, Matt was a Deputy Attorney General in the Office of the Indiana Attorney General. Matt graduated from the Indiana University and the University of Notre Dame School of Law.

    Matt sits on the boards for Ausome Indy and the National Association of Charitable Gift Planners, where he is the 2025 Conference Chair.
